River Valley welcomes new director

May 9, 2019

Bruce Cannon, former president of Yellowstone Christian College in Billings, Mont., is the new network director for River Valley Mission Network. The unanimous vote to call him took place Feb. 9, during the network’s annual celebration of churches.

Cannon served on the staff of Yellowstone Christian College for 10 years, first as dean of academics and the last seven as president.

In his new position, Cannon said he has a heart for pastors.

“Two ideas motivate me in this work,” he said. “First, there is always too much work for pastors. When there’s a team, even if it’s just two, greater return for the kingdom is dramatically increased. I want to be that support for pastors when needed.

“Second, pastoring can be lonely, frustrating, and discouraging. Pastors need a friend, sometimes outside their congregation. I care. I want to be a friend in tough times. Whatever the circumstance, my door is open, my phone is on, and my car is gassed.”

Cannon and his wife, Sue, previously served overseas with the International Mission Board. He also served as a pastor and church planter in Montana.

He holds a doctor of education degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, a master of education degree from Montana State University-Billings, a master of divinity degree from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary and a bachelor’s degree in Bible/Biblical studies from Criswell College.
